VALENTINA TERESHKOVA: First woman in space


Today makes the 53rd anniversary of Valentina Tereshkova’s first journey into space. On the 16th of June in the year 1963, Tereshkova became the first women in space, a record which made her not only a Hero of the Soviet Union but a heroine across the world.

She was 26 years old when she boarded the Vostok 6 spacecraft and went into orbit.

After her space flight she became highly active in politics, serving as a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR as well as being a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.
She continues to act as a global ambassador for Russian culture and maintains active membership in the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, the success party to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
